Summer 2020 Fashion Trends

Written by Lisa Fimian

Summer is here!

Though our usual heat spell of vibrant parties downtown and evenings on the beach may have been traded for homemade cocktails in our backyards this year, fashion duties still call.

While it’s always been crucial to limit fast fashion as well as place minority-owned businesses in the spotlight, right now it’s more important than ever. Small businesses, particularly those owned by women and people of color, have taken a particularly hard hit as a result of the pandemic’s economic impact, especially amid the ever-growing Black Lives Matter movement. A lack of black representation in the fashion world is not a new problem, but one that can come to a close with more support and celebration in the art and fashion industries. This summer has the potential to change the world of fashion; taking those steps to change by supporting small, ethical businesses will shift fashion’s artistic impact forever.

1. BASKET BAGS

It’s debatable whether these adorable basket bags are a recurring trend or a timeless summer staple, but either way, they’re a must-have for the warm months of summer. I give all the credit of the fashionable use of baskets to the English starlet Jane Birkin (namesake of Hermѐs’ beloved Birkin bag), who was known for carrying a basket instead of a purse while traveling in the 1960s and 70s. Whether you rock a round, lidded basket à la Birkin or an eclectic, edgier wicker bag, this summer tote will certainly make beach trips much more chic. Luckily, baskets and wicker bags are abundant in thrift stores, so that’s an easy way to sustainably shop for accessories this summer!

2. BANDANA TOPS

I’ve been seeing these tops all across Instagram and Pinterest for much of 2020, but what better time to wear these than in the dog days of summer? The best thing about this trend is how flexible you can be with it! You could fold a classy Hermès scarf in half or use a western-style bandana from a school play, and either way it would look effortlessly stylish. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, these are really easy to make too! Some of my favorites I’ve seen online are from 4uonlyUSA and Michel Men.

3. CLEAR/COLORED JEWELRY

Charm bracelets and clear beaded jewelry were certainly a Y2K staple, but boy, are they making a comeback this summer! I love pairing these with a monochrome outfit or with a colorful bikini— they spice up literally anything. My absolute favorite shop to get these adorable pieces are from blackcurrantpop.com, a black-owned business based in the UK. Check out the AMELIE candy heart bracelet; that one’s my fave!

4. FUZZY BAGS

Another trend I’ve seen circling social media are vibrant, fuzzy bags that add a little bit of color and texture to any outfit! Whether you go for a hot pink faux fur bag or a cow-print tote, these fluffy bags are worth checking out this summer. Versatile in shape and size, these are no ordinary bags. Some of my favorite small brands for these are @lolitajadeusa and @sagittaire.usa!

5. BORROWED MENSWEAR

Though oversized blazers and jackets tend to be more of a winter staple, Men’s button down shirts are the cutest way to dress down a sundress! Paired with some kitten heels or Doc Martens, a pastel button-down is the perfect overwear choice for your go-to summer dress. Thrift stores across the U.S. are plentiful in a variety of men’s shirts, or borrowing one from a friend is also a sustainable way to be fashionable this summer!

6.PATCHWORK BAGS

Alright, I just couldn’t leave this one out. I have loved quilted/patchwork pieces my entire life, but something about these colorful patchwork bags just screams summer. One of my favorite new designers, Asata Maisé, makes the most gorgeous, vivid baguette bags. Don’t miss out on these; they’re on their way to becoming a classic summer staple.
